What are the benefits of massage?

Massage therapy addresses a wide variety of health conditions and offers a holistic approach based on the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Massage can have many physical and mental benefits, including the following:

  • Alleviate pain and improve range of motion.

  • Enhance immunity by stimulating lymph flow - the body’s natural defense system.

  • Improve body confidence, self-acceptance and self-love.

  • Natural release and resolution of old emotions.

  • Experience of peace, wholeness and joy of being alive.

  • Exercise and stretch weak, tight, or atrophied muscles.

  • Help athletes of any level prepare for and recover from strenuous workouts.

  • Nourish the largest organ in the body - the skin.

  • Increase joint flexibility and support healthy aging.

  • Lessen depression and anxiety.

  • Increase presence, mindfulness, awareness, and embodiment.

  • Promote tissue regeneration, reducing scar tissue and stretch marks.

  • Pump oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs, improving circulation.

How often should I get a massage?

Getting a massage can do you a world of good. Getting a massage frequently can do even more. This is the beauty of bodywork. Taking part in this form of regularly scheduled self-care can play a huge part in how healthy you’ll be and how youthful you’ll remain with each passing year.

Budgeting time and money for bodywork at consistent intervals is truly an investment in your health.

Remember: just because massage feels like a pampering treatment does not mean it is any less therapeutic.

Consider massage appointments a necessary piece of your health and wellness plan. Work with your practitioner to establish a treatment schedule that best meets your needs.

We recommend monthly for maintenance (depending on lifestyle) and weekly or bi-weekly for recovery from injuries or the undoing of a lifetime of lack in self-care.

Any tips?

Here are a few tips that will help you get the most out of your session, whether you have been getting bodywork for a long time or it’s your first.

When we go to move your limb, it’s okay to let go and let yourself go limp. Heavy, heavy… don’t fret - we gotcha. We know it is hard not to be helpful. But giving over this control helps to keep the muscles unengaged so that we can continue to work on releasing tension throughout the session.

This also can be especially hard for “doers”. What a great opportunity to let go and just BE. Let someone else give to you while you simply receive. And, be kind to yourself. No problem if you can’t. It is a process of undoing.

Is it okay to speak during a massage?

YES. Are you too hot, too cold, need a slight shift or adjustment to be made? Too much pressure or not enough? Hate the music? Want silence? Want to share something on your mind? Thirsty during the session? This is your time. You can ask for what you need. We will do our best to support you in whatever way that we can. It is our hope that you will feel safe and comfortable in this space and get that which you need. But we do encourage you to limit talking that takes you out of being present with your body during the session, so you will get the most out of your treatment.

Should I drink water beforehand?

Not recommended. If you think that drinking a gallon of water before a massage is going to give you an amazing detox, sorry my friends… it just ain’t true. In fact, it might be stressful to your kidneys - and that’s no bueno.

We recommend you stick to your usual, healthy daily hydration. That being said, please try to remember to use the restroom before your session. If you get the urge during the session, you do not need to hold it. It is hard to let go and relax when you gotta go, right? It’s best to ask to be excused as it is well worth it to pause.

Undies or no undies?

Your comfort is the most important thing. That said, we recommend being fully undressed (meaning no undies), because so much of our imbalance centers in our hips and glutes. Being able to work the hips with oil and stones not only feels fantastic, but can also relax holding patterns at play in those areas.

Know that your decency is always going to be kept and remember that you decide. Do what feels good and right for you.
